History of golf

The history of golf is shrouded in mystery. By nowadays, it is not known what country is its homeland. We know only the age of this game - VI centuries. According to some data, golf first appeared in Italy. This is evidenced by fragments of ancient frescoes, which show how the Italians played a game "Paganico" that is very similar to golf.

Another version says that golf has appeared in Holland. The Dutch believe that the progenitor of the modern golf is their ancient game "kolf", which was played with a leather ball stuffed with feathers. But perhaps the most truthful and generally accepted version of the golf origin is a version, according to which golf appeared in Scotland in 1452. In Scotland, there is a legend according to which St. Andrew once hit a stone with his staff, so that it got into the rabbit hole. It happened on the field, which later became the first golf course. The elitism of this sport was born in the days of the Scottish queen Mary Stuart. During her reign, representatives of the upper classes began to play golf.

The first official rules of golf appeared in 1754 in St. Andrews. Since then, golf began its triumphant march around the world. In Russia, this game appeared about 15 years ago, and immediately gained high popularity and a large number of fans. Today, golf is the most prestigious and expensive game of the world, which has millions of fans around the world, exclusive and open clubs and annual tournaments involving professionals of the highest class.

Equipment and dress-code

There are 29 kinds of clubs. The total number of clubs in the game should not be more than 14 per player. The clubs vary in weight, length and angle of impact. The clubs are selected for each player individually. The necessary kind of the club is determined by the hit specificity.

Depending on the club, the hit can have a distance, height or accuracy priority. The club consists of a handle (grip) covered with leather or rubber, a head (club) and a rod connecting them made of carbon fiber or metal. All kinds of clubs belong to one of the 5 groups (woods, irons, pitching wedge, sand wedge, putters).

The clubs can be divided into several groups.
  • Woods

Used for long hits; as a rule, they are used to start the game.

  • Irons

They are used for average length and short hits.

  • Wedges

Irons for short hits and knocking the ball out of the sand.

  • Hybrids

The clubs combining the irons’ streamlining and the woods’ force of impact.

  • Putters

Used for short hits with the aim to drive the ball into the hole.

Within each group, all the clubs are numbered. A longer club has a smaller number and moves the ball for a greater distance. The clubs with adjacent numbers have the hit length difference of about 10 meters. Wood №1 is often called a driver. Using it, the ball can be sent to the maximum distance. Due to the driver hit by an experienced player, the ball can fly more than 300 meters.

In different situations, the player uses different clubs and during the game passes 18 fields, alternately scoring the ball into the holes. Passage of any field begins with the use of a wood. The meaning of the title shows that previously these clubs had wooden heads. The heads of modern golf clubs are usually made of titanium alloys.

Irons are designed to move the ball at different distances depending on its location relative to the hole.

Pitching wedge is used for high trajectory of the ball flight and maximum accuracy at short distance. The flight path after a hit with this club has a wedge shape.

Sand wedge is used for hitting the ball out of the bunker with sand. They have a special shape and weighted sole.

With the putter club, the player rolls the ball along the grass to get into the hole.

There are special clubs for children and women having lower weight, length and arm circumference.
